Homemade Root Beer
Old-fashioned root beer made with The Big H extract and naturally carbonated with a pinch of yeast. About 15 minutes of work, then it fizzes up in the bottles for 4 days.
Ingredients
- For 3 quarts
- For 3 gallons
Steps
- In a food-safe container, stir the sugar and root beer extract into the big batch of warm water until the sugar is fully dissolved.
- In a small bowl, stir the yeast into its small amount of warm water until mixed.
- Combine the two and mix thoroughly.
- Pour into clean bottles, leaving about an inch of headspace at the top of each.
- Cap the bottles, lay them on their sides wrapped in a towel, and leave them at room temperature for 4 days to carbonate.
- After 4 days, stand the bottles upright in the fridge and keep them cold until you drink them.
Notes
Don't skip the fridge on day 4. The yeast keeps making fizz while the bottles are warm, and chilling is what slows it down.
